Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

What is Acupuncture and Qi?
Acupuncture is one method of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) (also referred to as Oriental Medicine) that was developed over 3,000 years ago in China. In addition to acupuncture, TCM also embodies the adjunctive therapies of: Chinese herbal formulas, moxibustion, cupping, massage, electro-acupuncture, nutrition, Qi Gong and Tai Chi. Health is a condition of balance of yin and yang within the body. It is based on the belief that living beings have a vital energy, called “qi”, (pronounced chee) circulating through twelve invisible energy lines known as meridians on the body. Modern electromagnetic research has confirmed the existence of meridians. Qi is responsible for energizing, nourishing and supporting every cell, tissue, muscle, organ and gland. Disease begins when there is imbalance in the flow of qi along these meridian systems. Some contributing factors to this imbalance are: stress, dietary habits, physical and emotional trauma, lack of exercise and seasonal changes. Acupuncturists insert needles into some of over 1,000 available acupuncture points located on the meridians. The needles stimulate the qi to flow smoothly, restoring balance to the body and mind.

What does acupuncture feel like?
The majority of the time acupuncture is painless. Some sensitive areas may elicit a slight pinch. Common sensations can be feelings of tingling, warmth, or heaviness. Once all of the needles are in place, the patient rests. Many patients experience a relaxed state and some even fall asleep during treatment. After the treatment is finished, all the needles are removed.

What are Chinese Herbal Formulas?
Formulas are combinations of herbs from China blended to have a synergistic and medicinal effect. These formulas are specifically chosen for your pattern after a diagnosis has been made based on your pulse, tongue, symptoms and can be complimentary to acupuncture or used as the sole modality of treatment. Chinese herbal formulas rarely cause unwarranted side effects when prescribed and used correctly. California Acupuncturists are also Licensed Chinese herbalists and are schooled in possible herb and Western drug interactions. Oasis Acupuncture only uses safe herbs and herbal formulas that have been rigorously quality tested meeting or exceeding recognized Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Can I benefit from acupuncture if I am healthy?
Absolutely, in fact this is the healthiest way to live. I highly recommend seasonal treatments as a preventative. Doing this keeps the body balanced, boosts the immune system, prevents colds and flu, in addition to preventing bigger health issues from possibly arising.

What are the needles like and are they safe?
Needles have solid shafts made from solid stainless steel and vary in length and gauges of width. In general they are slightly bigger than a human hair. They come in sterile packages and are for one time use only. Immediately after treatment they are disposed of in a Sharp's biohazard container.
